Map In Chinatown, Manhattan 2016

As part of my series in Chinatown, I went to Canal Street Manhattan. Why Chinatown? Because it is little covered in photography. There is a photo book called New York City’s Chinese Community by Josephine Tsui Yueh Lee that includes the history of the Chinese community in New York City.

I used to work near Canal Street and I know the place well. Things have changed though with the passing of time.

Canal Street was buzzing with people and traffic coming down from the Brooklyn Bridge and the Financial District. Shop owners would come out of the store and invite in for a good deal. I got a pretty sweet deal on a handbag there once.

Now, there are rather few people walking down the street; the store owners still invite you in. There is a cloud of smog floating above the street and it smells like Chinese food.

This spot is probably at cross street Canal with Broadway.

I believe it is important keep your voice. When I lose it, I work hard to find my way back to the center, which in turn, opens doors onto new paths. I follow my passion.

Photography is a beautiful road I’ve been walking on with great humility. As a photographer, I like to use my camera to unravel the beauty and mystery of details. As a storyteller, I like to touch your hearts. Painting and mixed media unleashed new possibilities of expression.
